Abstract
Makaibari Tea Estates is a tea plantation in Darjeeling, India. Founded in 1859, it is the oldest tea factory in the world. It is still being managed by the fourth generation of the same Indian family. Makaibari is also a pioneer tea estate in the region practicing ethical and sustainable agriculture and, above all, it produces one of the finest Darjeeling tea, renowned in the entire world. But Makaibari is in the crossroads today. Mr Rajah Banerjee, current CEO, is handing over the tea estate to another family with years of experience as tea planters. The future of the company will soon be in the hands of Rudra Chatterjee, Managing Director of Luxmi Tea. The objective of the case is to discuss a path forward for Makaibari for the next five years. How can the new owners chart a course that is profitable but at the same time environmentally friendly as well as fair to the employees and the local community?
